Vintage 1964

The 1964 vintage was one of the best of the Sixties in Bordeaux, as reported by Robert Parker in the 7th edition of the Parker Guide to French Wines. Even before the first grapes were picked, the Minister of Agriculture announced that it would be "the vintage of the century".
From May to October, warm and dry weather offered Figeac ideal conditions for a superb vintage.
Deep in color, with a charming and a delicate bouquet of beautiful tobacco flavors, subtle notes of undergrowth mixed with aromas of tea leaves, licorice and mint. The mouth offers complex mocha, with a juicy black fruit.

The Jurade : In 1964, very invested in the reputation of Saint-Emilion, Thierry Manoncourt became First Jurat of the Jurade of Saint-Emilion—a role which he would hold for the next 23 years until 1987.
Birth : This is also the year of birth of the Cellar Master of Château-Figeac, Jean Albino, who has been working at the property for nearly 40 years.

Vintage Report

Particularly variable weather marked the year 1964. Successive waves of cold and heat moved over France. In the Bordeaux region, the winter ended with intense cold and heavy storms: snow fell in March from Poitou to Roussillon. In Saint-Emilion, spring remained cold and rainy. The summer of 1964 was hot and dry, with a heat wave in mid-July. The hot weather continued during the harvest. These conditions made it possible to harvest beautiful grapes in a perfect sanitary state.
